Project Summary

This project aims to complete the first of three phases in the development of a Fraser River conservation initiative. We will develop a web-based organizing tool for Fraser River conservation organizations which will act as an organizing “hub”, and eventually a broadcast and outreach tool.

Working with Visible Strategies, the RSBC will coordinate and develop a Fraser River see-it(tm) (Social Environmental Economic Toolkit) to assist with the development of the initiative framework. We will identify our partners organizational vision, mission, goals, strategies and actions. Working in partnership with the David Suzuki Foundation who are developing a Fraser “Threats and Protection” Report, we will develop a list of significant issues, threats and concerns in the Fraser River Basin and identify gaps between key issues and conservation efforts. Once the list of key issues and threats has been defined, we will then develop a list of policy objectives and recommendations that will form the basis of the “Fraser River Salmon & Sustainability Charter”. Members of the project team will then meet with: elected officials, business, labour, First Nations, conservation, recreational and community leaders to gain agreement in principle.

Our goals are to:
Ø Increase investment in Fraser River Basin conservation.
Ø Increase efficiency and effectiveness in the conservation community within the Fraser River Basin.
Ø Draw attention to key conservation issues within the Fraser River Basin.
Ø Identify gaps between current conservation programming and emerging or existing issues, threats and concerns in the Fraser River Basin.
Ø Gain support of a “Fraser River Salmon & Sustainability Charter” from elected officials, business, labour, First Nations, conservation, recreational and community leaders.

Final Results

This project will produce:
Ø A list of significant issues, threats and concerns in the Fraser River Basin.
Ø Identify program goals and activities of key Fraser River conservation leaders are identified and placed in See-It(tm).
Ø Identification of gaps between key issues and this conservation effort

The Fraser Initiative will benefit all Fraser River Basin communities by increasing conservation and stewardship efforts in the Fraser River Basin by assisting our partners with identification of gaps and needs.
