Location: Basin wide Project Summary
Overview The 2009 Riversheds Forum will be held May 15-17th in conjunction with the bi-annual DFO Stewardship Conference in Maple Ridge. The Forum has previously been held in the upper, middle and lower Fraser regions on eight occasions. As a component of the Stewardship Conference, this year’s Forum will offer the following: In keeping with the 2009 Stewardship Conference theme, ‘Sustaining the Spirit’, our Forum provides participants the opportunity to explore stewardship and sustainability from different perspectives and make new connections with other key government agencies, stewards, First Nations and other community leaders. We aim to document one or two Rivershed Stories’ of participants from each of the Fraser’s six regions which will end up on our website. Other Rivershed Stories will be collected from interested conference participants through a Salmon Speakers Corner. Individuals will be prompted to Tell A Tale. Save A Salmon (i.e. their favourite river or salmon story). Objectives Methods The following are the proposed Forum activities: Paddle Field Trip: We will provide a guided canoe paddle on the Fraser River (i.e. Mission to Kanaka) including interpretation by local community leaders. A shuttle will be provided to transport participants to and from the conference and field trip location. Rivershed Stories: We will select at least six participants, preferably one from each of the Fraser River Basin’s six regions, to present their Rivershed Story to be videotaped. Presenters will be asked to submit an outline of their 10-minute story prior to the conference. A RSBC web page will be created highlighting these stories and will be linked to partner websites. Salmon Speakers Corner: In order to document Rivershed Stories from other interested conference participants, we will set up a Salmon Speakers Corner. Individuals will be prompted to Tell A Tale. Save A Salmon (i.e. their favourite river or salmon story). Keynote Speaker/Entertainment or Gift Mugs: We have offered to assist with securing a key-note speaker, entertainment or gift mugs for the conference if needed. Cultural Recognition: In keeping with the RSBC’s programs, we will encourage our local First Nations contacts to participate in the Conference. We will invite past Forum participants and others will be invited to the 2009 Riversheds Forum/Stewardship Conference.
