Project Summary

Overview

The Stewardship Centre for BC (SCBC) has long held an interest in building the capacity of the stewardship sector in BC. The Business Plan for Supporting Community Based Stewardship Organizations in BC was developed with this interest in mind. When the Business Plan is complete, it will contain many suggested mechanisms for building the capacity of the stewardship sector in BC, some we already are aware of, and some will be new and innovative ideas.

During the 2009-1010 year, we propose to maintain the energy and momentum generated by the development of the business plan, and begin to implement some of its recommendations. Although the Plan is not yet complete, it is not difficult to determine that a few of the recommended capacity building initiatives will include:
1. Provide opportunities for collaboration, networking and shared learning among stewards.
2. Formulate an action plan for implementing the Business Plan for Supporting Community-Based Stewardship in BC, including a development strategy to build the resources necessary for implementation.
3. Promote and enable access to best practices information and other valuable resources.
4. Ensure the ongoing core capacity needs of stewardship organizations are met.

This project is a perfect compliment to the Stewardship Works! project, which is providing core funding in order to demonstrate the impact on increasing stewardship organization capacity.

Objectives
1. Strengthen community-based stewardship organizations by providing them with the resources, training, funding required to enable them to protect and conserve species and habitats.

Methods

Based on the recommendations provided in the completed Business Plan for Supporting Community-Based Stewardship in BC:
1. Develop an action plan and development strategy to implement the recommendations in the Business Plan.
2. Provide opportunities for BC stewardship organization representatives to participate in the National Stewardship Conference, “Strengthening Stewardship” in Alberta in July 2009.
3. Provide training and professional development opportunities.

All activities will be guided by the project Advisory Committee.
