Location: Fraser Valley, Maple Ridge, BC Project Summary
In 2006, the British Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF) commenced a habitat rehabilitation project in the Alouette River based on a 2005 assessment of the area. BCCF prescribed a total of 30 secured large woody debris structures to compensate for the lack of cover features, as construction of the Alouette Dam in the 1920s and human activities have removed valuable old growth riparian conifers from the watershed. The addition of woody debris retention devices will benefit salmon, as salmon carcasses will be recycled in the aquatic ecosystem, resulting in the collection of marine derived organic nutrients. This project will lead to an increase in juvenile salmonid over-wintering and summer rearing survival, an in increase adult salmonid productivity, and the creation of sound habitat structures to accelerate the natural recovery of fish habitat in Alouette River. |
