Project Summary

Bridge River salmon populations have been severely affected by the construction of Mission Dam in 1948 and Terzaghi Dam in 1960 and the operation of Carpenter Reservoir.  The Terzaghi Dam blocked upstream salmon migrations and a number of salmon populations were extirpated.  This project, located in the Lower Bridge River below the dam, may effectively mitigate some of the historic and present impacts.

Several agencies including DFO, Xwisten, and BC Hydro have investigated fish habitats and mitigation strategies in the Lower Bridge River.  Feasibility studies have identified a number of habitat development projects in the Bridge River, including Applespring which has been rated as a good project.

The project is designed to benefit coho salmon primarily.  During 2008, rearing ponds and a 400m fish channel were excavated.  A prefabricated steel water intake will be installed in 2009 at the upstream end of the channel structure.

Interim Progress

1) Sept. 1/09 construction of concrete Flow Control Structure, was changed to Oct. 9/09 to a steel intake from another DFO project the reason for revision was weight(8 ton) and Transportation problems, ie. 4x4 road access.
2) First plans were to construct a concrete manhole to house the control valve, changed to 9’ x 6’ steel culvert but none were available so the structure was constructed from treated timbers. This was all done by Tuesday, October 14, 2009, 11:42:31 PM-Photo oppurtunity Valve opened by Gerald Michel
3) DFO Habitat specialist and two workers are presently planting willow whips with plans to obtain native shrubs and trees from a local nursury, there are plans to sow a mixture grass seed.

Project Summary

A feasibility study conducted in 2003 identified a number of areas where gravel bars were isolated by scour created by water releases from Terzaghi Dam on the Lower Bridge River, this project will create rearing habitat for salmonid fry and smolts away from the mainstem of the river. Xwisten (Bridge River Band) have had this project on the back burner for the past 28 years, initially the plan was for a hatchery system, this has since been changed because of the Wild Salmon Policy (WSP), hopfully Coho will spawn in the area provided as well as pinks when they do return to the system.
