Project Summary

In 2006, the First Nations Leadership Council hosted a province-wide Fisheries Forum, signaling a new era for BC First Nations cooperation on fisheries matters.

The purpose of the Forum was for First Nations to develop a common understanding of political commitments, discuss recent proposed changes to fisheries policy, reconcile fisheries issues among themselves, and develop a shared vision of the Pacific fishery. One of the key approaches discussed by First Nation delegates was mechanisms for relationship building between First Nations and governments relating to fisheries issues in BC, as well as relationships with commercial, sport and recreational sectors.

This project led to improved information sharing and collaboration between First Nations and governments on fisheries issues at a time when there are uncertainties in the fisheries sector.
