Project Summary

Bonaparte Watershed Stewardship Society (BWSS) will be undertaking a planning exercise to complete a combined Watershed-Based Fish Sustainability Planning Procedure (WFSP) by following the WFSP template created by a provincial and federal inter-agency Steering Committee, and completing phases 2 and 3 of the WFSP guidebook. Stage 2 will include the production of a biophysical and sociopolitical profile of each of the priority watershed planning units identified in the stage 1 WFSP and will identify objectives, strategies and targets that must be met to achieve fish sustaining practices within the Bonaparte Watershed. In stage 3 a detailed fish sustainability action plan will be produced and it will show how tasks will be completed to support planning initiatives, identify options, establish goals and timelines and determine implementation and monitoring plans.

This project will determine better options, preparation, management and mitigation plans for the Bonaparte Watershed, which is subject to the possibly negative impacts of agricultural activities, urban development, rural stream and lakeshore developments, and climate change. By developing a comprehensive WFSP, proper preparation and actions can protect salmon habitat in the Bonaparte Watershed, ensuring a sustainable future for fish populations and habitat.
