Location: Fraser Valley, Chilliwack-Vedder River watershed Project Summary
Hazard management works are typically conducted under emergency conditions, during which fish and fish habitat protection are often given secondary priority. The overall objective of this three phase project is to develop a proactive hazard management strategy for the Chilliwack River that presents a planned approach to community safety and protection and also incorporates the significant fish and habitat components of the watershed. The first phase of this project involves the consolidation of existing information, and the collection of new information, regarding fish and riparian habitat, river hazards (flooding, erosion, debris slides, etc.), and hazard mitigation options along the Chilliwack River. The results of this first phase of the project provide the necessary components for the development of a much-needed planning Strategy for the rivershed (Phase 2) as well as the establishment of an appropriate river management body to adopt the Strategy and to provide long-term monitoring and management of both river hazards and habitat values within the system (Phase 3). |
