Project Summary

Overview

The idea behind our project is to engage and educate people of all ages about the Lillooet River Watershed, celebrating the unique species and exceptional watershed characteristics, incorporating First Nations tradition ecological knowledge of the region. Programs use innovative and hands-on programming to strengthen connections to nature. We will foster and strengthen community and regional partnerships to benefit salmonids and the Lillooet River Watershed as a whole. All of our education aspirations culminate in the development of the Pemberton Valley Eco-Interpretive Centre that will have a legacy of a single place of environmental learning for local, regional and international guests and residents and for children and adults alike.

Objectives
1. Increase the education and awareness of salmon, their habitat and role in the ecosystem for people of all ages in the Pemberton Region.
2. Raise awareness about ongoing Stewardship Pemberton activities and provide opportunities for participation and volunteering in meaningful programs.
3. Secure the additional funding required to build the Pemberton Eco-Interpretive Centre.

Methods

There are three main facets to this program:
1. Salmon Education Programs for Pemberton Region including:
a. Continue with the very successful weekly Summer Salmon Camps started in 2008. The camps are offered as part of a daily summer camp managed by the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District. Partnering in this manner has the benefit of inkind advertising, transportation from the community centre, additional supervision, administrative duties and insurance coverage. The Village of Pemberton has once again committed One-Mile Park use for the delivery of the programs. The content of the camps came from a variety of sources utilizing a vast range of environmental education programs. The most successful programs will be rerun and new programming added and tested with our kids
b. Maintain a presence at all community events such as the Canada Day Festival, Pemberton Festival and Slow Food Cycle. This is not only an opportunity for educating residents but increases the Stewardship Pemberton and Eco-Interpretive Centre profile. We would like to host the second annual BC Rivers Day celebration in Pemberton since the inaugural festival was so successful.
c. Partner once again with local schools participating in the Salmonids-on-the-Classroom program offering additional activities such as fostering a tree. Seedlings are offered to students to look after through the summer and are brought to Rivers Day to be planted along a salmon habitat stream in One Mile Park.
2. Watershed and salmon themed banner development for downtown Pemberton. Local artist Vanessa Stark (http://www.vanessastarkart.com) is interested in developing the artwork. The Village of Pemberton has committed to labour and equipment necessary for installation.
3. Continue fundraising for the Pemberton Valley Eco-Interpretive Centre. This will be done through a combination of securing corporate donations and funding applications.
