Project Summary

With the assistance of Lura Consulting, Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) and Fraser Basin Council (FBC) will be developing an outreach plan for the Fraser Salmon and Watersheds Program (FSWP). The overall vision of FSWP is to bring about human behaviour change for the benefit of salmon and the watersheds they depend on. A number of initiatives are already underway related to research and salmon rehabilitation, and a public awareness campaign - “Think Salmon” - has been initiated. While these initiatives have been commenced, the FBC and PSF wish to develop an overall outreach plan that will incorporate these approaches and provide a comprehensive strategic framework for the future outreach program development and implementation. The plan also needs to have measurable behaviour change objectives and outcomes that are matched to the overall science objectives.

Key steps in the planning process include a literature review to identify the greatest threats to salmon in the Fraser Basin, focusing on water quality, water quantity, and access by salmon to habitat. A strategic planning session will identify what specific human behaviour changes to focus on, what barriers exist in relation to change, and what strategies are needed to overcome these barriers. With the development of a FSWP Outreach Plan, individuals living in the Fraser Basin will become more aware of how their daily activities affect salmon, leading to habitat improvements for salmon.
