Estimating Birkenhead River Chinook Spawner Residency

Year 2007
Organization Mount Currie Indian Band - Lil'wat Nation
Project type Fisheries
FSWP funding source DFO Fraser Basin Initiative
Grant amount $22,000
Total project value $29,188

Location: Lower Fraser, Mount Currie Indian Band Indian Reserve

Project Summary

The Mount Currie Band - Lil’wat Nation will be addressing knowledge gaps on the biology of an important local Chinook salmon population by determining spawner residence for Chinook salmon in the Birkenhead River through direct observations.

The current Department of Fisheries and Oceans funded Aborginal Fisheries Strategy stock assessment program is lacking a spawner residence specific to Birkenhead River Chinook, limiting the ability to accurately determine Chinook population status. As the Lil’wat Nation relies on salmon for food, social and ceremonial purposes, it is essential that these knowledge gaps are eliminated for effective fisheries management of this important Chinook population.

The Birkenhead River, as per my most recent discussions with the DFO, is deemed a Lower Fraser River Area system.

Thanks in advance to considering my suggested changes to the area descriptions.
