Project Summary

The BC Cattlemen’s Association (BCCA) will be launching the Farmland - Riparian Interface Stewardship Program (FRISP) to provide training, technical information, advice, prescriptions, project cost estimates, and support for riparian enhancement, waste management solutions, and/or restoration projects to the agricultural community and various resource stewardship groups. FRISP will provide mediation services for issues arising between landowners and regulatory agencies with respect to riparian damage considered to have resulted from agricultural practices. This program will encourage joint planning of habitat restoration and agriculture land use activities between landowners, resource management agencies, and various community groups.

Sustainable utilization of any land base that supports agricultural activities is often a complicated issue, as environmental sustainability must be balanced with production economics. Proper land management requires that individual ranchers and farmers understand riparian function and the significant impact that riparian mismanagement can have on an agricultural operation, fisheries, and general watershed health. FRISP aims to foster long-term environmental stewardship and sustainability for the agricultural community by restoring and enhancing farmland as related to watershed management. By providing educational resources and promoting cooperative planning of riparian habitat restoration and farmland activities, this project will ensure that salmon habitat is protected and can coexist with agricultural activities.
