Project Summary

FRISP provides training, technical information, advice, prescriptions, project cost estimates, and support for riparian enhancement, waste management solutions, and/or restoration projects to the agricultural community and various resource stewardship groups.  In addition, FRISP provides mediation services on issues arising between landowners and regulatory agencies respecting riparian damage considered to have resulted from agricultural practices.  FRISP also provides assistance in the development and implementation of remediation plans.  These services can also be applied to conflicts arising between neighbours, or various vested interest groups.  Further, FRISP endeavours to involve participation in the joint planning of habitat restoration and agriculture land use activities between land owners, resource management agencies, and various community groups.

The majority of projects under the FRISP program have directly or indirectly improved salmon resources by improving riparian management on farmland throughout the Fraser Basin and other BC watersheds.  By addressing riparian degradation, FRISP assists in halting farmland loss through stream-bank restoration.  Sustainable utilization of any landbase that supports agricultural activities is often a complicated issue, as environmental sustainability must be balanced with production economics. Proper land management requires that individual ranchers and farmers understand riparian function and the significant impact that riparian mismanagement can have on an agricultural operation, a fishery, and general watershed health.

Interim Progress

The FRISP program has been actively involved with more than 100 individual land owners throughout the province over the past 6 months. Activities range from monitoring completed works, performing consultations on management issues involving environmental concerns, and completing major restoration projects.  Our engagement throughout the province is listed below, by watershed:

Fraser Watershed: 62 landowners
Bulkley Watershed: 11 landowners
Peace Watershed: 17 landowners
Columbia Watershed: 17 landowners
Vancouver Island: 1 landowner

FRISP has been engaged with a great number of other organizations, including the Environmental Farm Plan, Salmon River Watershed Roundtable, Bonaparte Watershed Stewardship Society, White Valley Community Resource Centre, Kersley Farmers Institute, Vanderhoof Fish and Game Club, Greater Vernon Water District, and a variety of technical committees.
