Project Summary

BC Conservation Foundation will be restoring a side channel in Foley Creek that was dewatered due to a gravel build up caused by a flood in the Chilliwack watershed November 2006.  Local experts have suggested that this side channel has provided very valuable habitat for the last 25 years and is worthy of fixing. Immediate repair of this valuable off channel habitat will restore the productivity of Foley Creek.

Off channel areas provide critical habitat for various salmonid life stages. The primary benefit is safe refuge from high water events in the mainstem channel. Due to the current unstable nature of Foley Creek and substantial bed-load movement, evident in the November 2006 flood, repairing this side channel will restore limited off channel high water refuge habitat for juvenile salmonids. Introducing a source of groundwater to the channel will improve water quality throughout the year, with sediment control during winter freshets and steady, temperature moderated summer flows. By re-establishing a year round water supply to the Foley Creek side channel, the survival rate of salmonids can be expected to rise.
