Location: Okanagan and Kootenay, Armstrong, BC Project Summary
The University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) conducted a scoping study in Fortune Creek watershed to compile data, define issues around water management for fish and people, make recommendations for further work and community engagement, and provide a preliminary study design for a summer 2007 project in the area. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has classified Fortune Creek as a high priority stream for fish habitat protection, as there have been many reports of fish dying during late summer to fall due to low flows and warm stream temperatures. This scoping study was developed as a result of a November 2006 meeting with representatives from the City of Armstrong, Ministry of Environment, UBCO, Township of Spallumcheen, DFO, the Spallumcheen Indian Band, and the White Valley Community Association. The main steps in the project included a literature consultation, preliminary in-stream fish flow needs assessment, identification of major watershed issues, and future project design. The study identified six major watershed issues with recommendations, including lack of sufficient in-stream flows for fish, surface-groundwater interactions within Fortune Creek, high sediment fluxes and their effect on fish habitat, lack of monitoring on hydrology and water use, impacts of Mountain Pine Beetle infestation, and a desire for improved communication and partnership amongst all parties involved in Fortune Creek. |
