Project Summary

The First Nations Leadership Council will be hosting a province-wide Fisheries Council Forum with the purpose of developing a collective understanding of, and support for, a province-wide representative BC First Nations Fishery Council.

First Nations political and technical organizations in British Columbia have long been advocating on the part of their constituents on fisheries-related issues. Until quite recently, these organizations did not regularly work together in a collaborative fashion, which reduced the collective political power of First Nations and produced disjointed approaches to fisheries issues. The creation of a BC First Nations Fishery Council will allow First Nation groups to address local, regional and national fisheries related issues with a unified approach.

The Fisheries Council Forum hopes to develop the BC First Nations Fishery Council by the summer of 2007. This Council will be responsible for:

  • implementing the Fisheries Action Plan;
  • holding regular province-wide fisheries forums and assemblies to increase open dialogue, cooperation and support on fisheries issues;
  • supporting regional or watershed-based forums and processes to deal with local and regional issues;
  • developing collective First Nations fisheries-related strategies and policy perspectives;
  • sharing information on fisheries issues with BC First Nations and support improved data collection and sharing;
  • supporting First Nations in developing and implementing their fisheries and aquatic resource plans; and
  • building effective working relationships with First Nations, First Nations organizations (provincial and national), governments, the media, and others.

1.  Can someone tell me how they are managing sockeye salmon habitat on Quesnel Lake, North Arm and the Mitchell and Penfold Rivers?  I am aware of TFL 52 of West Fraser, who monitors their activities that impact salmonid species. 2.  Who monitors effluent from Mt Polley Mine into Quesnel Lake & Quesnel River?
