Project Summary

The Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) will be reviewing and incorporating comments provided by the Pacific Scientific Advice Review Committee (PSARC) in the Fraser River Steelhead Harvest Model in order to improve and clarify the model documentation based on the PSARC recommendations. At the Steelhead workshops in February and March of 2006, it was recommended that a peer review occur for the Fraser Steelhead Harvest Model. The model accounts for the cumulative effects of commercial, Aboriginal, and sport fishing in southern BC and the US Juan de Fuca/Puget Sound. In October 2006, the PSARC recommended that further efforts be made to provide more information on the model.

This project will clarify the Fraser Steelhead Harvest Model with particular emphasis on mathematical and statistical aspects, and data will be added or appended that describes the empirical relationships between harvest rate and fishing effort. A scientific report will be co-authored by Dr. Marc Labelle and Mr. Rob Bison, and will be suitable for submission as a working paper. Further details on the practical applicability of this model for pre-season management plans and post-season evaluations will also be provided.
