Project Summary

Okanagan Nation Alliance, in collaboration with three other First Nation groups and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, will be conducting a study to address whether groundwater upwelling in areas in streams are important thermal refuge areas for juvenile Coho salmon. This project will also provide a coordinated science-based approach between First nations and government agencies.

If it is found that groundwater upwelling areas are areas of refuge for salmon and therefore are critical habitats, further actions should be taken to identify groundwater sources in other Interior BC streams exhibiting elevated temperatures; develop protection strategies for these habitats, and pursue groundwater protection through legislative change. By identifying new areas of critical habitat, Okanagan Nation Alliance and its partners will be providing Pacific salmon populations with increased protection and conservation efforts.
