Project Summary

The Commercial Salmon Advisory Board (CSAB) will be constructing a framework to implement a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between CSAB and the Sto:lo First Nation in order to assess the current state of the Cultus Lake Sockeye salmon population in an effort to create an integrated Fraser River Sockeye salmon management plan. This project will ensure continuation of the detailed planning process and allow for activities identified within the MOU to be carried out, in order to restore and conserve Cultus Lake Sockeye. Concurrent with this project, outreach to the recreational and conservation sectors will be carried out.

The Cultus Lake Sockeye population has been depressed for some time and was almost listed as endangered under the Species at Risk Act in 2005. By creating a framework for the MOU and keeping the restoration project in motion, this project will structure the essential elements for recovery of this stock and lay out the foundation for addressing the key threats to the stock as well as opportunities for recovery.

By project completion, goals and objectives for predator control will be in place, and a research plan will be scoped in order to develop a Eurasian milfoil removal program. Goals and objectives for hatchery augmentation will include identification of targets for rapid recovery, and when and where it should take place.  CSAB will also be working to develop a stewardship program for Cultus Lake Sockeye, and also assess the Sockeye stock in Cultus Lake.
