Location: Thompson, Adams and Shuswap Lakes Project Summary
Final Results The SFC and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) conducted an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) inventory on Adams and Shuswap lakes to determine whether invasive species (perch) are dispersing from known source populations, and thus potentially expanding their range and impact. The project was in conjunction with inventory work being carried out by the MOE in the Thompson watershed relating to potential lake(s) rehabilitation in the watershed. The project consisted of a stream inventory crew that installed and checked downstream box traps on the upper, mid, and lower portions of outlet streams from Skamana and Forest lakes. A second crew conducted an inventory on several locations within the Shuswap / Adams lake drainage using fyke nets and pole seines. Only one perch was caught in streams (Forest Lake) targeted during this study while no perch were captured during the lakes portion of the project. The SFC crew also assisted an MOE crew in checking the upper trap at the outlet of Skamana Lake. During the first trap check at Skamana outlet (Hiuihill Creek) there were 100 yellow perch captured and over the next two weeks a total of 100 more were captured. This data was extremely valuable in determining the potential risk of further dispersal of perch to areas downstream of Skamana Lake (Adams River and Shuswap Lake system). |
