Location: Thompson, Enderby, BC Project Summary
The Kingfisher Interpretive Centre will be launching a program of education and awareness to deliver experience-based activities in their ‘living classroom’ through stations on topics such as life history of salmon, aquatic invertebrates, watersheds, fish anatomy and identification, habitat, traditional life ways of Interior First Nations, and plant identification. ‘Salmonids in the Classroom’ is another educational resource provided by KICS, which allows children from North Okanagan school districts to raise Chinook salmon fry in their classroom aquariums. All of KICS’ programs aim to promote community building, networking and increasing regional knowledge. There has been great interest in partnerships and collaborative efforts with other community organizations, to act locally with a common vision, in providing education and awareness to a growing number of summer residents and tourists. KICS hopes to form the Shuswap Watershed Alliance to promote collaboration and an organized approach to bioregional interests and issues. These education and engagement projects will work to achieve true conservation through sustainable management, and by helping individuals understand the role humanity plays in natural systems.
