Project Summary

The Kingfisher Interpretive Centre Society (KICS) is a not-for-profit community run salmon hatchery and interpretive centre dedicated to promoting and developing environmental ethics and fostering a sense of stewardship toward salmon, watersheds and our environment.

Through innovative partnerships and cooperation KICS will conduct an alien invasive fish species (AIFS) inventory of Thompson/Shuswap waterways to determine presence/absence of AIFS steering towards a government led AIFS management plan. As the threat of AIFS is immediate, KICS will develop educational materials and curriculum for the general public and regional schools, distribute, post and pilot said materials through existing programs and opportunities, hopefully slowing or stopping the spread of AIFS by changing human behaviour.

KICS will be hosting 4000-5000 school children (K-12) in the spring and fall, providing hands-on ecological salmon based education.  These school children raise Chinook salmon (egg to fry) in classroom aquariums to augment their Salmonids in the Classroom education.  Another several thousand persons will be visiting the site throughout the summer months and will be offered similar free educational opportunities through interpreters, summer programs and guided tours of the salmon hatchery facilities.
