Lower Fraser Habitat Acquisition Prioritization Project

Year 2007
Organization The Nature Trust of British Columbia
Project type Habitat
FSWP funding source Living Rivers
Grant amount $50,000
Total project value $90,750

Location: Fraser Valley, Hope, BC to Mission, BC

Project Summary

The Nature Trust of British Columbia will be assessing and prioritizing future land purchases by conservation partners within the 70km reach of the Fraser River corridor between Hope and Mission. The project’s habitat biologist will be considering private land holdings within the Fraser River’s floodplain with an emphasis on lands with frontage on the Fraser River, sloughs within 1 mile of the mainstem, and tributary rivers or salmon bearing streams within a half mile of the Fraser River corridor. A systematic protocol and property ranking criteria will be developed that considers the fishery productivity of the site and its potential for additional habitat enhancement; the presence of significant First Nation or other cultural features; and the risk of the site being converted to non-compatible land use (from a fishery perspective).

This project will significantly improve the land acquisition process by providing a scientific and socio-economic approach to the decision making process resulting in land donations or purchases. The Nature Trust of BC and its partners have completed two conservation transactions in this high priority area this year, and they have had to act opportunistically by responding to individual landowners who have come forward or acting on referrals from government agencies. This project takes a more proactive and strategic approach to conservation land acquisition in an area under developmental pressures and where there is a rapid appreciation in the sale price of properties with access to the Fraser River.
