Project Summary

Musqueam Ecosystem Conservation Society (MECS) will be working to restore salmon habitat in Musqueam Creek, Vancouver’s last wild salmon stream, by removing culverts and constructing in-stream habitat structures. As salmon are a keystone species upon which many other species depend, MECS’ goal is not only to save the last of the wild salmon, but to also capture the imaginations of the community, interest groups and governments by showing them the importance of salmon in their daily lives.

Although wild salmon populations in Musqueam Creek are historically low, the Coho stock is wild and therefore holds the genetic variability required to restore the population. MECS will be working to improve salmonid access to available habitat, increase habitat quality, and increase summer flows to restore wild Pacific salmon populations in Musqueam Creek.
