Nicola WUMP – Water Management Tool – Phase 1

Year 2006
Project type Habitat
Project type Fisheries
FSWP funding source --
Grant amount $10,000
Total project value $32,800

Location: Thompson, Merritt, BC

Project Summary

The Nicola Watershed Community Round Table developed a water management tool to deliver an Internet accessible water decision support system emphasizing real-time geospatial data. The end result of such a system would be an Internet portal that for the first time integrated critical geospatial data directly relevant to water decision-making in the Nicola.

The main tasks under Phase 1 were to organize a workshop that would bring together all partners including Nicola WUMP, Ministry of Environment and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.  Following the workshop there were efforts by ESSA Technologies Ltd. to obtain a commitment from the two levels of government to provide funding for the next phase in preparation for a more detailed submission to Geo Connections for additional funding.

As the cost of developing the Nicola Water Management Tool is very high, additional funding is required in order for the project to continue forward. If the tool is developed, it will address the lack of information available for decision making, the lack of water monitoring, and it will serve as a technical information clearinghouse for key information support of the Nicola Water Use Management Plan.
