Project Summary

This project is a collaboration between Lillooet Tribal Council (Northern Statimc Fisheries - NSF) and Nlaka’pamux Nation Tribal Council (NNTC). The project will pilot test a new, independent sockeye stock assessment system for the Mid-Fraser River. Data and information generated by the project will be extremely useful for Nlaka’pamux and St’at’imc communities, PSC and DFO for managing sockeye fisheries upstream of Hope. The NNTC and NSF fisheries will be assessed independently of downstream stock assessment programs such as the PSC Mission echosounding program. The pilot project will evaluate the feasibility of using traditional fishing methods for estimating sockeye abundance, using CPUE statistics. Quantitative assessment data will be obtained from setnets and dipnets at traditional St’at’imc and Nlaka’pamux fishing locations between Sawmill Creek and Kelly Creek. Data collection will rely upon the use of daily log books by participating fishers.
