Project Summary

Overview

The Lillooet Naturalist Society and Cayoose Creek Stl’atl’imx are working in partnership on a restoration project at the confluence of the Seton and Fraser Rivers.  This is a long-term stewardship project funded in part by BCRP and we have strong community support.

An extension of the restoration project, is to engage our partners and the local community in three visioning sessions.  The sessions will generate good relationships so that we can work collaboratively towards a common goal - the building of the Fraser River Interpretive Centre.  Working together through the process of establishing the centre encourages long-term partnerships, which would continue well into the future.

This Centre would provide a “home” to implement locally developed environmental and cultural programs in our community, promoting individual responsibility to the environment, thereby initiating personal actions towards sustainability.

We require professional assistance to host three Visioning Sessions.  This person would provide a framework for planning and working through the initial phases of decision-making, and provide professional advice on ideas as they are presented, in regard to site selection and “green” alternative building design.

A Feasibility Report will be completed to guide future work, including visual materials, which will assist in leveraging funds.

Objectives
1. Develop a framework and planning process, and healthy atmosphere, to ensure involvement of the community in all decision making processes that is collaborative and respectful.
2. Hold three Visioning Sessions where the community will take ownership of the project and brainstorm ideas, and eventually come to consensus on feasibility and design plans.  Undertake research throughout.
3. Feasibility Report completed, to include details on funding opportunities and long-term operational structures.  This knowledge will allow us to move forward confidently to achieving our defined goals.
4. Initial visual plans completed, to include site positioning, culturally inspired building design and how it incorporates into the restoration work.  This will allow us to leverage funding for a centre.

Methods

Bring together current partners to set-up a framework and planning process to ensure we have the skills and resources to successfully facilitate these visiong sessions.

Partners undertake initial research into Interpretive Centres, including goals, capital and operational funding and possible programming (with assistance from existing centres listed above)

Promote 1st Visioning Session and invite partners/community
Hold 1st Visioning Session with a focus on giving information on what an Interpretive Centre could provide to our community, the capital and long-term operational challenges, and avenues for pursuing funding.  Set-up planning framework with community and become familiar with ŇgreenÓ design.  Undertake initial brainstorming session.

Partners research items as discussed at 1st Visioning Session and research permits required for building.
Contractor to develop initial design based on community input.

Promote 2nd Visioning Session and invite partners/community
Hold 2nd Visioning Session with a focus on presenting research into capital funding and ongoing operational funding opportunities.  View visual examples of design ideas generated from 1st session.  Discuss what we like and do not like about the plans and brainstorm new ideas to improve design.  Use consensus building activities to ensure all persons are heard.

Partners research any items as discussed at 2nd Visioning Session
Contractor to develop design plans based on 2nd brainstorming session

Promote 3rd Visioning Session and invite partners/community
Hold 3rd Visioning Session with a focus on coming to consensus on building design, site placement, trail development and native plant landscaping.  Look at plans from 2nd session and brainstorm any last improvements to design.

Feasibility Study completed, based on community consultations and research undertaken.
Visual model and plans completed.

Final Results

The final report for the study is posted in the orange resource box to the upper right.
