Location: Lower Fraser, lower Fraser Project Summary
Final Results This project focused on the conservation of high priority salmon trout and char populations, and restoration and protection of stream habitat in the eastern Fraser River watershed. As proposed, habitat restoration and improvement projects and nutrient enrichment projects were completed on key lower Fraser River salmonid producing watersheds, namely the Chilliwack, Chehalis, Coquihalla and Silverhope each of which suffers from the cumulative effects of riparian logging, urbanization, channelization, possibly interception fishing, and low marine survival. Future restoration opportunities have been explored throughout the lower Fraser which has led to the proposed development of a promising off channel project to restore salmonid habitat in the upper Coquihalla River one of only two native, wild summer-run populations of steelhead in the lower Fraser River. Physical restoration projects were completed on the Chehalis River (Miyazaki 2008- attached) with the construction of six large wood fish habitat structures, and Silverhope Creek (Bigsby 2008- attached) a project that included performance improvements and repairs to past restoration as well as addition of new large wood fish habitat and bank stabilization structures . Inorganic nutrients were added to Foley, and Centre creeks in the Chilliwack watershed and the mainstem Chilliwack, Yola Creek in the Silverhope watershed, the Coquihalla River, and Statlu Creek in the Chehalis watershed. Salmon carcasses were distributed in Norrish Creek. This project has helped expand our knowledge of the benefits of physical habitat restoration, and nutrient enrichment by contributing to continuing restoration effectiveness monitoring projects throughout the upper Fraser Watershed which allows for adaptive management of conservation initiatives. |
