Project Summary

The project will be conducted with full knowledge and support of the Soowahlie First Nation,
DFO, MOE, regional non-government organizations (e.g. Chilliwack River Watershed Strategy),
City of Chilliwack and Fraser Valley Regional District.
The DFO Cultus Lake Salmon Research Laboratory is uniquely situated adjacent to Sweltzer
Creek and as such can provide support and important insight to this research and matters
concerning salmon habitat and freshwater ecosystems in general.
The Soowahlie Band of the Sto:lo First Nation occupies the land to the south of the Chilliwack
River. The northern portion of Soowahlie First Nation land was the location of previous gravel
extraction operations and aquifer fed groundwater has infiltrated and filled extraction pits in the
area. As a result efforts to provide access to the ponds for local fish populations was completed;
however, flooding limited and damaged fish access. Since flooding events bank stabilization
efforts and dyking has occurred along the northern portion of the Soowahlie First Nation property.
The restoration of the ponds would occur on Soowahlie First Nation land and provide longer term
stable salmon habitat, productive ecological system for other animal use in the area, aesthetic
benefit to the community as well as provide opportunities for members to obtain some training
and participate in restoration efforts.
