Project Summary

The Ministry of Environment, in partnership with Fraser Basin Council, Fisheries & Oceans Canada, Columbia Shuswap Regional District and Thompson Nicola Regional District, will be building a multi-agency collaborative capacity to identify problems and integrate solutions around land and water use in the Shuswap Lake basin. Shuswap Lake is beginning to show signs of impact from the exponential developments it has experienced in the last twenty years, and in many areas, there is no longer suitable salmonid habitat.

Habitat degradation is expected to impact all fish species in the Shuswap Basin, including Sockeye, which spawn on the shores and rear in the lake for a year before migrating to the ocean. Juvenile Sockeye require healthy lake ecosystems to build body strength and size for the smolting process. Shuswap Lake is home to the Adams River Sockeye run. These fish, along with all late run Shuswap Lake Sockeye, are not only culturally important to BC’s identity but provide impressive fisheries and tourism opportunities for the length of their migration. By raising overall awareness regarding the current challenges facing the Shuswap basin, and developing best management practices and policy for future and current Shuswap basin land and water use, this project will greatly benefit salmonids in the region.

Your very own web page indicates a problem with all the development on Shuswap Lk vs “the fish” but yet our government still allows huge developements such as the two new houseboat facilities that are being built right by salmon and freshwater fish spawning habitat. It makes one wonder if in fact the Provience or Federal Gov’t for that matter really cares!!

Well, good to see some work is being done…but if the grant amount is $45,000, and total project value is $88,250, how is the balance going to be funded? Hope this project is completed somehow.

Thanks for the post and please do keep us updated.

ack in the mid-1970s it was becoming possible to build small, cheap computers for the first time. One of the first on the market was the Altair 8800, a rough-and-ready kit available for under $500. At the Homebrew Computer Club in Menlo Park, near San Francisco, two enthusiasts thought that they could do better. Steve Wozniak, the engineer, designed the Apple I. Steve Jobs, the entrepreneur, talked a local store into ordering 50 of the machines. Apple Computer was in business.
