Project Summary

Stave Valley Salmonid Enhancement Society will be developing a wetlands self guided teaching package, specific to the protected Silverdale Wetlands nature area in Mission, BC. The package will include lesson plans, necessary materials for learning activities, and will be field tested and promoted with teachers in the Mission School District. It will also be available on the internet for easy access by teachers in Mission and neighbouring school districts.

This project will introduce hundreds of Mission school students and others to the ‘wonder of wetlands’.  Silverdale Creek Wetlands, a newly protected wetland site in their own backyard will become accessible and the lesson plans and activities developed to help students understand and appreciate the nature of wetlands.  Using creative activities researched and developed by University College of the Fraser Valley students and committee members, elementary children will learn about the unique features of a wetland and how wetlands can sustain a diversity of wildlife, as well as important services to people.

Teachers and students will be encouraged to stay involved with protection and restoration activities through the Silverdale Wetlands Committee or through other local participating environmental conservation organizations.
