Project Summary

The Stewardship Centre for BC Society (SCBC) will be launching Stewardship Works!, a multi-partnered core funding challenge program to support community-based stewardship groups in BC.

An initiative of SCBC and the Ministry of Environment, Stewardship Works! will help address the known core funding barrier that community-based stewardship groups are currently facing. This program will allow these groups to improve how effectively and efficiently they deliver a wide range of conservation projects throughout the province.

A three year pilot project has been designed, and the first year of the project will be commencing in 2007. The first stage of the project is to complete project design, and then the project will be tested. Five stewardship groups in the Fraser Basin will receive core funding, and the program will be evaluated based upon the results.

This program will encourage dialogue and action among stewardship groups, and will also increase the number of volunteers participating in stewardship activities, leading to increased public awareness of salmon and their habitat, and to more effective and efficient habitat rehabilitation projects.
