Project Summary

Overview

The Stewardship Centre for BC (SCBC) has developed the Stewardship Works! program in order to increase the capacity of conservation and stewardship organizations in BC. These partners are critical in conserving, protecting and restoring BC’s fish, wildlife, and their habitats and biodiversity values.

This program will provide small core funding grants, and closely evaluate and report on the impact of increased capacity on conservation efforts, providing funders with tangible benefits as a result of investment. This evaluation will be accomplished through regular reporting, telephone interviews, literature reviews, online tools and workshops.

This program is currently funding one organization in each of nine regions in BC with small annual grants during the pilot project phase. These grants will be used by groups for organizational capacity building initiatives such as volunteer coordination and organizational outreach. SCBC is also requesting additional funds to continue the development of the program.

This project is complimentary to another SCBC project, Building a Business Plan for Stewardship in BC, which focuses on alternate methods of building capacity within the stewardship sector.

Objectives
1. Compile data and recommendations to demonstrate and quantify the benefits of providing stewardship organization core funding.
2. Increase wildlife and habitat conservation efforts by increasing the number of volunteers participating in stewardship.
3. Continue to liaise with funding agencies and organizations to underscore the need to fund capacity building programs.
4. Encourage dialogue and action among stakeholders.

Methods

Building on past successes, the Stewardship Works! project will:
1. Continue to raise funds and provide core funding support for the use of stewardship groups in the Fraser Basin, and throughout BC.
2. Provide training and professional development opportunities to grant recipients, as an additional strategy to build capacity of stewardship organizations.
3. Distribute core funding grants to selected stewardship organizations within the Fraser Basin
4. Continue the developmental evaluation process which is ongoing throughout the term of the project and supports developmental decision-making and course corrections along the emergent path of this initiative. Our evaluation specialist has become an integral member of the Stewardship Works! project team. This will be composed of:

i. Telephone interviews
ii. Regular progress reports
iii. Focus group workshop

5. Continue to develop and deliver a communications strategy to promote the future success of the Stewardship Works! program
6. Provide website tools to enable stewardship organizations to post volunteer opportunities

This approach was developed on the advisement of an Advisory Committee and a workshop of funders, government agencies and non-profit stewardship organizations. It will be further refined as we work with stewardship organizations throughout the terms of their grant agreements, and based on continual analysis of the evaluation results.
