Streambank Stabilization at Key Locations on the Bonaparte River | |
Location: Thompson,
Bonaparte Watershed
Project Summary
Purpose:
The main purpose is to undertake 8 high priority streambank and riparian area restoration sites in the Bonaparte River Watershed to improve fish habitat and to demonstrate that watershed planning produces tangible local results. During the past several years the Bonaparte Watershed Stewardship Society has undertaken a series of individual restoration site priorities, partnering with DFO, other funders, and landowners on a site by site basis. Improving fish habitat for coho and other salmonids at these key sites is the primary goal, but the sites will also be used as part of a plan by the Bonaparte Watershed Stewardship Society to help improve human behaviors by encouraging individual actions that support fish, fish habitat and ecosystem health.
Method:
The 8 restoration sites that will be undertaken under the proposed 2008 FSWP project will be selected from a list of candidate sites based on: 1) the potential improvement to fish habitat value, 2) level of cooperation from the landowner and 3) the opportunity to use the sites as education and demonstration sites for future participants. Standards for construction required by DFO and MOE will be adhered to and technical support for project implementation will continue to be provided by DFO. Pretreatment assessments will be followed by as built reports. Local involvement in the planning and construction aspects of the project will improve local educational value, project awareness and support.
Outcomes:
The continuation of local restoration work demonstrates how past land use practices and human behavior can be changed to provide for fish sustainability and all that fish sustainability represents in terms of watershed sustainability. The restoration activity will directly result in improved rearing and spawning habitat for coho, and other salmonids. Demonstrating the river restoration process locally will also help establishing a higher level of local interest. The proposed restoration activity not only improves fish habitat, it also links to recent initiative to develop a watershed scale plan. These restoration activities provide a very powerful action feedback that will help build momentum amongst participants in the watershed planning process by demonstrating that they can make a difference by following the actions recommended in the watershed plan.
Final Results
The final report for this project is posted in the orange resource box to the right.
This a termendous help in getting the word out as to what we are doing as a community to help preserve and enhance our watershed. I live in and on this system and it is my hope to leave the watershed as good or better than I found it
