Supporting Land Stewardship Actions and Protecting Habitat | |
Location: Fraser Valley,
Chilliwack River and Cultus Lake Watersheds
Project Summary
The project will build the stewardship community and increase the care of wildlife habitat on private land through a landowner contact program that involves property walkabouts, property reports, workshop and newsletter. We hope
-an increase in the number of landowners who appreciate, understand, and care for their land,
-encourage a community of land stewards.
-contact by letter and phone-call the majority of private landowners in each of the two watershed (at least 250),
-deliver property walkabouts with at least 25 landowners,
-create and deliver 25 property reports that cover in a scientific way the uniqueness of the area, the history, the ecological value of each property and suggestions for how to improve the land’s ecological integrity,
-in conjunction with other initiatives, prepare a community stewardship newsletter for landowners involved in project (upwards of 25-50), ongoing for those doing action projects, and
-increase in Species at Risk occurrence records for the BC Conservation Data Centre.
Finally this work is hoped to bring about increase in landowners signing stewardship agreements and eventually for a few select landowners we hope they will protect habitat through conservation covenant or title acquisition by a conservancy (donation or purchase).
