Location: Thompson, Merritt, BC Project Summary
In the summer of 2006, the Nicola Tribal Association (NTA) deployed twenty temperature loggers in the Nicola watershed to collect data in order to address concerns over hydrologic and temperature shifts attributed to climate change. Very few water temperature data sets exist for the southern interior, and this project provided information for the existing database. It was found that several watersheds experience extended periods where stream temperatures exceed lethal temperature limits for salmonids and optimal rearing temperature ranges, while other watersheds are still within acceptable ranges even in the hottest summer months. The stream temperature data collected by the NTA will help prioritize integrated water planning in areas most at risk for salmon and watershed sustainability, and will also form part of a large database that the University of British Columbia is assembling to contribute to knowledge of climate change effects on fisheries. Final report: Critical temperature thresholds report |
