Project Summary

This study aims to determine linkages between streamflow and temperature and other factors, such as riparian cover, air temperature, and groundwater conditions using a combination of computer modeling and field investigation methods. In the first year of the study, the study team will verify the quality of existing riparian cover maps, and provide additional data as needed. The team will then use an existing groundwater model along with the riparian map to establish a temperature monitoring network on these streams, which will provide short- and longer-term data for complementing and aiding the interpretation of hydrologic data. The project is intended to kick-start a more comprehensive research project between Simon Fraser University, University of Waterloo, University of Victoria, the Alberta Research Council, and government (e.g., BC Ministry of Environment) and non-government (e.g., Watershed Watch Salmon Society) organizations, for which funding will be sought from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and elsewhere. The project has immediate and long-term benefits respecting understanding potential impacts of climate change on streamflow conditions, and will highlight the importance of protecting riparian cover and groundwater relative to the future health of wild salmon.
