Watershed Fish Based Sustainability Plan Completion (Stages III and IV) YR 2 | |
Location: Thompson,
Bonaparte Watershed
Project Summary
Purpose:
The purpose of the 2008-2009 watershed planning project is to complete the WFSP planning cycle that began in 2007-2008 by focusing on Stage IV of the WFSP planning sequence (Implementing and Improving the Plan) and begin seeking ways to implement the recommended actions.
Method:
For approximately eight years the Bonaparte Watershed Stewardship Society has worked to raise awareness of watershed sustainability issues amongst a broad range of local stakeholders including industry, residents, government, First Nations and others. During that period individual projects have been undertaken with great success; however the group found that broad sustainability issues in this large watershed seemed difficult to address without a cohesive plan. The Watershed Based fish Sustainability Planning (WFSP) process was undertaken beginning in 2007-2008 with the understanding that Regional Priorities existed in the watershed and the hope that these large scale issues could be addressed more effectively at a watershed level by building local participation and support using a watershed sustainability planning process that was inclusive, and respectful to all concerns.
The WFSP process has four stages, is flexible and iterative with feedback between Stages intended to go in perpetuity as an adaptive management strategy to keep the plan up to date, proactive and inclusive. Some overlap and feedback will occur and is desirable.
Under the 2007-2008 WFSP project the objectives were to focus primarily on Stage II (Establishing Watershed Priorities) and Stage III (Developing a Watershed Plan) of the WFSP planning sequence… Stages II and III have been largely completed. The steps in this approach undertaken to date include: Process Review and Adoption, Establishing Guiding Principles, Issue Identification, Issue Review, along with some preliminary selection of indicators. Progress to date has been summarized in four reports (contact Andrew Stegemann, FSWP to view copies). The final stage achieved in the first year of planning was to identify indicators and make preliminary recommendations.
This year the planning process will shift from predominantly being a Stage II (Establishing Watershed Priorities) and Stage III (Developing a Watershed Plan) activity to a predominantly Stage IV (Implementing and Improving the Plan) activity.
Outcomes:
The plan will create a local level of awareness and organization that is a very useful tool in building participation at the implementation end of the process in areas such as field action and monitoring amongst a broad range of supporters and is a powerful tool for improving awareness, garnering support and seeking funding for recommended actions.
