Project Summary

The Xeni Gwet’in First Nations Government will be expanding a 2006/2007 project into the Xeni Gwet’in Caretaker area to provide community members training to further assess fish habitat, conduct water sampling and understand adult salmonid migration patterns in the area.

This project intends to strengthen the community’s capacity to understand the requirements needed to consult, negotiate and manage their fish resources. The Xeni Gwet’in trainees, with support from technical consultant Cariboo Envirotech, will provide a report that details habitat health, water quality and adult salmon escapement in selected waters of the Xeni Gwet’in Caretakers area.

This project will include a Fish and Fish Habitat Assessment Report of Nemiah Creek and its tributaries, and a second report entitled Quality Waters Summary Report containing detailed information on fish and wildlife, water licenses, mining leases, and reviews of fishery management plans. A water quality sampling program in numerous lakes in the region will also take place. Overall, this project will address the lack of current information on the numerous lakes and streams in the Xeni Gwet’in Caretaker Area, and will also lead to habitat restoration and stock assessment in the area.
