Location: Cariboo-Chilcotin Project Summary
Overview The 2009/10 Xeni GwetÕin Chilko Roundtable Watershed Plan intends to build on the Chilko River Roundtable achievements of the 2008/09 year. Additionally, in 2001 the Chilko River Watershed Review report compiled existing information on the area. This report and subsequent work done to date in the area suggests a parallel with the Watershed-Based Fish Sustainability Planning process. Xeni GwetÕin has developed a system that achieves the same goals, is not process driven but rather results driven and has been very successful to date while meeting community needs. In 2006/07 the Nemiah Creek project was completed and provided an opportunity for 4 community members to gain basic fishery field skills and activities were completed to collect data that was non-existent for the Nemiah Creek watershed, within the Chilko Watershed. This project will provide funding for a project coordinator, fisheries biologist, facilitator, and administrator to undertake the necessary developments of the Roundtable process. Roundtables have been a proven means Province-wide to engage citizens in discussions with government agencies to assist in watershed plans that contribute to the well being of salmon stocks. Objectives Methods Objective #1: Citizens, groups, government agencies, industry and First Nations will all be invited to sit at scheduled Roundtable meetings to be held in Williams Lake at scheduled times throughout the year. An independent facilitator will chair the meetings with an agenda that allows all voices to be heard on watershed issues that affect the well being of salmon stocks in the Xeni GwetÕin Caretaker Area. Objective #2: Contract biologists from Cariboo Envirotech Ltd., staff from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Ministry of Environment, Integrated Land Management Bureau, BC Parks, and other Roundtable members will present their findings on an ongoing basis related to the health of the Caretaker Area watersheds and the salmon that reside within. Objective #3: Watershed issues that negatively affect salmon and other non anadromous species will be identified through Roundtable discussions Objective #4: Roundtable level discussions with all participants will provide remediation on issues that negatively affect salmon and non-anadromous fish stocks in the Xeni GwetÕin Caretaker Area.
