Overuse of sprinklers can have a major impact on the amount of water used in the city of Salmon Arm. Automatic sprinklers will be one of the issues the city’s WaterWise program will be targeting in 2007.

A report compiled by the city’s conservation program states: “The outstanding water use challenge arising from 2006 is the undocumented use/abuse of automated irrigation systems. It is suspected that these AIS may be active during the night hours on multiple nights beyond the designated times. To date this has not been monitored or documented. It has been established by survey that we may be looking at about 25 per cent of users (upwards of 1,000) with AIS.”
The study reviewed two zones in Salmon Arm during a week, one of which was Canoe. The study identified a need for more testing as well as the potential for water savings.
“Canoe is experiencing a high potential for recoverable leakage,” the report stated. “The level of leakage found during the leak survey would not seem to account for the level of loss reported. Therefore other sources of losses should be evaluated.”
