Rafe Mair: As Nature Dies

Community: Vancouver Island

Local opinion leader Rafe Mair gets off a great rant on The Tyee about our collective inaction—politicians, fish farmers, citizens—entitled As Nature Dies. First and foremost is his desire to see better decisions made for healthy wild salmon stocks.

There is no doubt now that the sea lice from Atlantic salmon fish farms in the Broughton Archipelago are slaughtering Pink salmon and Chum salmon smolts, with disastrous consequences.

Mair’s rant strikes me as the honest outrage of a frustrated man who wants to change the world. He’s well known for his opposition to fish farms and his environmental advocacy, but his evidence is compelling and robust, and his polemic certainly heartfelt. Although he’s never shy with his opinion, I almost always find time to listen to or read what he has to say.
