Three Coquitlam Schools Work Together to Save Salmon

Community: Fraser Valley

Published: The Tri-City News

Teachers at Eagle Ridge elementary, Scott Creek middle and Gleneagle secondary schools are developing a program aimed at students of all ages. And although only two planning meetings have been held, organizers are hoping tentative ideas like street banners, salmon sculptures, brochures and a mentorship program could spark student interest in the creek and help curb vandalism there.

“On the road, right in the middle of the road near the school, was a great big beautiful coho, with a beautiful dark green back and a red belly,” former teacher and local biologist Ruth Foster said.

Someone had stabbed it and thrown it onto the road.

“It occurred to me that it would be worthwhile to look at ways to increase awareness,” she said, noting that after she approached staff at the schools, they immediately began brainstorming ideas for a cross-school program.

The article stresses the importance of advocacy and education aimed youth.
