What is the significance of the yellow fish beside the storm drains on our roads?

These yellow fish remind us that all storm drains flow directly and unfiltered to the nearest stream; only clean rainwater should enter them. Other substances dumped down these drains often hurt fish, wildlife, and plants.

Storm drains empty into an underground collection system that discharges untreated water into a nearby stream—not the domestic sewage system. In urban areas, the runoff already contains sediment, animal waste, and particles from car exhaust. The harm this causes is exacerbated when people also dump oil, swimming pool water, and toxic household or industrial compounds into storm drains.

We can’t put yellow fish on all storm drains, but hopefully those drains that are marked will help with the overall message.
