Hatcheries Inspire Children | |

My salmon story has to do with the school groups who come to the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery during spawning season. As a recent arrival in the Pacific Northwest, I have been really impressed with the ecological, economic, cultural, and mythic significance of salmon in the life of this region; I wanted to learn more, so I trained to be a tour guide at the hatchery for these groups. I have enjoyed so much the enthusiasm, knowledge, and curiosity of these elementary school children. They are fascinated by the spawning salmon and know a great deal before they get to the hatchery; they eagerly tell me about kype and redds and parr marks and smolts. They are quick to spot spawning pairs in the creek, seem quite comfortable with the dead salmon bodies on the creek banks, and “ooh” and “ah” when they can see big chinook and coho through the viewing windows of our holding pond. I encourage them to visit often and to return with their parents, telling them that “the more people know about salmon, the better it is for salmon.” I feel moved and hopeful by being with these children.
